  About Us

Transmissometers are instruments that measure the optical Transmittance of a test piece over some specified range of wavelength.  In general, these instruments can perform at infrared, visible, or ultraviolet wavelengths, although all wavelengths will not be suitable for any particular application.

The test piece may be a small piece of glass, a film being vacuum coated, a small vial of liquid, a large vat of liquid, or the atmosphere itself over some specified distance -- perhaps a kilometer or more. So the term "Transmissometer" does not offer many clues to the type of instrument required -- a Transmissometer is truly an "application-driven" instrument.

Test Piece or Substrate
Transmissometer Type
Special Features
Small sample of solid material
Glass, Plastic, Filter, Film, etc.,
Measured in the atmosphere
Usually for QC application
Bench Type (self-contained optics)
Remote Head (special size samples) Single or multiple wavelengths
Compact self-contained optics.
Remote head (special geometries)
Single or multiple wavelengths
Moving Web in the atmosphere
Typically for Process control and QC
Remote Head configured to web size Custom remote head with one or more channels to monitor transmittance across width of web.
Moving Web in High Vacuum
TYpically for Process Control and QC
High Vacuum Remote Head
configured to web size
Custom remote head configured for installation in High Vacuum chamber. Single or multiple channels to monitor Transmittance of web during coating process.
Liquid samples in plastic, glass or fused silica cuvettes
Usually for laboratory environment
Bench Type (self-contained optics)
Remote Head (special size samples) Single or multiple wavelengths
Compact self contained optics configured to adapt to cuvette type in use.
Liquid samples in large vats or tanks Remote Head configured for each particular application.
Single or multiple wavelengths
Sealed Remote head
Submersible in non-corrosive liquids Configured for the application.
Gases in long path vessel
External head configured to vessel
Usually in the near infrared
(700 to 1000 nM wavelength)
Critical components sealed against corrosive gases.
Atmosphere over hundreds or thousands of meters.
Typically to measure air quality or to detect smoke from forest fires.
Remote optical head usually single wavelength. Optical head with remote corner cube reflector to make double pass through atmosphere.

Graham Optical Systems manufactures a wide range of transmissometers and can configure one specially for your application.  All of these instruments perform in full ambient lighting conditions -- no need to make the measurements in the dark. We can help with your selection of the appropriate Transmissometer for your application.
